Phase Space Explorer
Interactive visualization of quantum optical states in phase space. Explore the Wigner and Husimi Q quasi-probability distributions alongside their time-dependent electric field expectation values and fluctuations. Both functions are plotted as a function of the quadrature components X and Y, which correspond to the real and imaginary parts of the complex field amplitude α. In these coordinates, the Wigner function is bounded between -2/π and 2/π and the Husimi Q function between 0 and 1/π, so we plot πW(X,Y) and πQ(X,Y), and fix the 3D plot to a fixed z-axis range to allow for direct visual comparison of different states. The color scale is also fixed to this range, with negative values (indicating non-classicality) shown in shades of blue and positive values shown in shades of red. The side plots show the marginal distributions obtained by integrating the Wigner/Husimi function over one quadrature, which for the Wigner distribution yields the probability distribution of the other quadrature. For example, the X marginal is obtained by integrating W(X,Y) over Y, giving P(X), the probability distribution of measuring a particular value of the X quadrature.
